How Does the Creighton Model Work?

At Our Lady of Hope Clinic in Madison, Wisconsin, we are dedicated to helping you reach your family planning goals in a natural, life-affirming way. We employ the Creighton Model of natural family planning, a scientific method of observing biomarkers of a woman’s cycle in order to determine peak fertile days. Here’s a brief overview of how it works and why it’s so beneficial for women’s overall health.

Observation

The Creighton Model is a natural method of family planning. It employs the science of NaPro Technology by using biomarkers, primarily cervical fluid, throughout the woman’s cycle to determine fertility.

By observing the quality of a woman’s cervical fluid through the month, her fertile days can be identified. Cervical fluid during this fertile time becomes transparent, elastic, and slippery.

When the fluid has this consistency, conception is possible for up to six days. The fluid creates a hospitable environment for sperm. Once the woman ovulates, the sperm can join the egg. This results in pregnancy. If conception does not occur, the fertile period ends with a dry phase. About two weeks after the fertile phase, a women’s cycle begins again if pregnancy hasn’t occurred.

Charting

These changes over the course of a woman’s cycle are then charted. Patterns of fertility and infertility are displayed through the data. This chart becomes an essential tool for spouses as they work together to achieve or avoid pregnancy.

Consultation

We know that charting at times can be complicated, especially if there are underlying health issues. As such, we’re proud to offer a Creighton instructor who is available to help you interpret your charts, answer questions, and problem solve.

Additionally, our physician Dr. Mike Kloess is also a certified Creighton Model Fertility Care medical consultant. During your appointments, Dr. Kloess will assist you with your charts and provide fertility care based on your data.

Effectiveness

Research has shown the Creighton Model to be 98.7 to 99.8 percent effective at avoiding pregnancy with perfect use and 94.6 to 97.9 effective with typical use, as good as artificial birth control and more effective than barrier methods like condoms.

For couples wishing to conceive, employing NaPro Technology can be a highly effective method of achieving pregnancy. Success rates with NaPro Technology can be higher than other infertility treatment methods.

Benefits

The Creighton Model’s primary benefit is that it respects the dignity of the woman. By treating her fertility as a healthy normal function instead of a disease, it encourages the cooperation of the spouses to work with her cycle’s natural fertile and infertile phases.

The Creighton Model is also natural. It does not employ hormones to suppress the woman’s reproductive system. Because of this, there are no side effects that are common with artificial birth control, such as nausea, migraine, weight gain, decreased libido, or mood changes.

Because the spouses must work together to identify fertile periods, the burden of family planning shifts from the woman to the couple. This method can improve communication between spouses and help them become clear on their family goals, whether to achieve or avoid pregnancy.

Through the analysis of the woman’s cycle, the Creighton Model can expose underlying health issues at the root of infertility. What might have been missed or suppressed through chemical contraceptive can now be identified and treated.

For this reason, many couples have gone on to conceive after employing the Creighton Model as means to help their doctor heal conditions that were causing infertility. By focusing on the biology of the individual patient, NaPro Technology offers real hope and healing to couples who are suffering from infertility.
